Basement Water/Moisture proofing
I live on Woodbine Avenue and I have old pipes coming out of the walls. They were probably steam pipes.  Within the past year or two after my street was repaved and new water lines put in, I noticed that when it rains we get water dripping through the pipes and it is very hard to keep the basement dry.  I don't have a finished basement, but I am looking to find someone who knows how to solve this problem.

If you would like to recommend a contractor, please respond to this inquiry via the OFC Listserv.

Carpenters
A great carpenter is Sam Giampietra.  Phone is 215-663-1666 (h) and 215-203-6840.  He has recently started his own business after years of working for other companies.  He remodeled most of a friend's kitchen.  He added on a stair rail for me for the bottom three steps and matched the original stair very well.  He also put a new basement door on (I know that slanted door leading into the basement has a name, but I don't remember it.  I call them the Wizard of Oz doors!)

We had our entire house (brick and stone) repointed by Matthew Proud.  215-673-0541. The Proud brothers were trained by their father and they all each have competing businesses so you'll see the name around. I've seen signs at work sites in town and on the Mainline.  My one suggestion is to not hire someone who is in another trade but also does pointing.  (such as a roofer who also does pointing)    Stone and brick pointing is a craft and only a professional that speciailizes in the trade should be hired.

We use Sean Kearns of Kearns Electric. We had him do quite a bit of work when we moved into our house in OF in June. We have been very pleased with his work. I didn't do a cost comparison, but did get his name from a friend who did talk to a number of electricians and got a number of bids before he hired Kearns Electric. One thing I learned, from my father-in-law, who used to be an arson/fire inspector, is that with electricians, you want someone who is good and who will do the work correctly...because if not, you could be in big trouble.  We found Sean to be a  fair and honest businessperson as well as pleasant and professional. He is licensed and insured. Office 215-535-0190. Email: kearnselectric@comcast.net.  However, if I recall, they are fairly busy, and initially took him a few days to get back to us. Good luck with your electrical issues!

We've used Bonnie and Jim Davolos (267-918-3008) for about 2 yrs. and are very pleased.  They always bring a third person with them (Nicole) and they are very fast, clean, reliable and lovely people.  They come to our house every 2 weeks and charge $100 for 1 hour.  It's amazing what they accomplish in that time.  It takes a little while until they get the routine and know your house in order for them to do it in such a short amount of time.  Of course, it also depends on what you want them to do.  They are very flexible and I highly recommend them.

we've been told our sys was put in compliments Augustafer's (sp.?),   who were apparently in the HVAC biz. we have been well served by Ben   Block, a terrific man and entirely reputable/personable. We rec'd a   card offering a pre-season (ha!) checkup for $85 instead of $125 if b4   11/26. that said, we have gas hot water heat and he is familiar and   competent. this is our second (oh yeah, carpetbaggers!) year w/Ben and   we can say nothing but the best -- he answers Qs if you have 'em,   makes suggestions if you take 'em, and all those good qualities.
Submitted by: vernyce dannells (vernyce@mac.com)

The Bells enthusiastically co-sign any recommendation of Block Heating and Air Conditioning.  I cannot find my pre-season check up card anywhere but you can Google them. Ben was here just yesterday installing a new furnace.  Our furnace and cooling units are ancient -- had to be the first off the assembly line.  They have been dying since we bought the house 5 years ago and Ben has performed incredible feats of CPR on them both -- including risking life and limb last week to shut down a furnace that was apparently shooting out fire every time it fired up (hubby and I were in complete denial about the house-shaking rumbling every time the heat stoked up and refused to go look).  He burned all the hair off his arm decommissioning it and didn't mention it, but the smoky aroma gave it away.  They're honest, straightforward, and don't waste time. He's also very busy, so you occasionally have to call a few times to get hold of him.
Submitted by The Bells ( kenyatta4@aol.com)

The heating and furnace people that put in a new furnace for us is J. Conley and Sons in Upper Darby . I believe that they have been reasonable in terms of cost and they are trustworthy. I hope this helps.

Retrofit Air Conditioning
We had our boiler replaced with central heating and A/C last year by Campano. I have nothing but the highest praise for their work, their ethics, and the job they did!  We had orginally contracted with someone who started the job, got half the money and never came back to finish!  Fortunately that guy had a conscience and subcontracted the rest of the job to Campano, so ours was a story with a happy ending.  Campano did not try to rake us over the coals, they did more than what their contract called for and they completed the job on time.

The Pompetti's are the best if you have steam heat. I personally deal with Jamie (the son) who had always been exceptionally pleasant and professional. You will pay more with these guys but I found them to be perfectionists who stand behind their work.
For high-velocity central air we used Michael Warner (MJW Plumbing, Heating and A/C). He did an excellent job, is a great guy and his quote was almost half of what others wanted to charge. He can be reached at 215-368-9515 and 215-739-8990. Best of luck with your projects.

We just retiled a bathroom and found someone who is very affordable and did excellent work. There is a small language problem but his brother-in-law can get on the phone if necessary. They way we did it was to pay them for their time. They went with us to the tile store (in this case Home Depot) and told us what materials they needed. They charged $300 for labor for the bathroom.
We priced out a small family room floor (using my bad memory) with dimensions of 190 sq feet. The price they gave us was $800 for labor. The floor needs prep work since it currently us carpeted and the underlying floor isn't in great shape.

Window Repair/Insulation
Here is the window guy's info. He will take apart your wood windows, retrieve the weights and replace old ropes or chains with new copper chains. In 2003 he charged us $30 per window including the chains (!) but I think the price of copper is much higher now...
